Development of ecological biocides, through the incorporation of Synergistic Bio Active molecules

The BIMOSYN project focuses on investigating the degree of synergy between bioactive antioxidant substances and conventional biocides, in order to develop more environmentally compatible pesticide products.

The BIMOSYN project, developed with the support of the European Union within the Seventh Framework Program, focuses on investigating the degree of synergy between bioactive antioxidant substances and conventional biocides, in order to develop more environmentally compatible pesticide products. The aim is to use natural plant extracts that have the potential to be used as adjuvants for biocides in the chemical sector.

The study focuses on the inclusion of adjuvants, of an antioxidant nature and of natural or synthetic origin, in the formulation of commercial products with an insecticidal or fungicidal effect, both for domestic use and pesticide products for professional use. The natural adjuvants come from derivatives of plants, fruits and vegetable residues such as pine bark, grape seeds and extracts of medicinal plants. The inclusion of these adjuvants will reduce the percentage of biocides commonly used in the formulations and thus be able to have substances for the control of pests of a less impactful nature for the environment. The planned areas of application will be the control of urban pests, specifically insects, and the protection of wood against fungi and xylophagous insects.

The main objective of this project includes the study of the synergy between antioxidant bioactive molecules of different types and synthetic biocides that are included in the new European biocides directive 98/8/CE (BPD), for the development of new pesticide products, which can be clearly differentiated from the rest of the pesticide products on the market. With this strategy it is intended that the pesticide product be competitive, both economically and in efficacy with respect to existing products on the market, avoiding its problems due to the high level of toxicity.

The main tasks of this project is the compilation of all the basic antioxidant materials, extracts of medicinal plants and biocides necessary for the development of the research, in order to study the synergy between them. Subsequently, formulations that include the selected antioxidant and biocides will be developed to subsequently evaluate the effectiveness of the different formulations according to various European and international standards on pest control. Finally, data on semi-industrial treatments with the final formulation of pesticides will be obtained and cost analyzes will be carried out to help reduce the price of the final formulation.
